I was thinking about the New Year and how many of us are looking forward to it with hope for the future. But what about those who do not have much hope for the future? The homeless in America, especially the veterans who gave so much now are all but forgotten.

Do you remember VISTA? Volunteers in Service to America is a federal anti-poverty program that places volunteers in non-profit organizations and public agencies to help fight poverty, mostly in foreign lands. My brother John was an early enlister and served in the Philippines for some five years.

Why couldn’t there be a similar type of program to help the homeless in America that would address public health, Drugs, education, the environment, public safety, employment, and housing. Something like

VISTA-H…Volunteers in Service to America’s Homeless.

We spend billions to support other countries and their poverty. We need to fix ourselves first.

Make Americans healthier and less dependent on drug usage and curtail the homeless crisis.
