Common Cents

A fixture in Americana is going away. The production of pennies will be eliminated. Another thing that will no longer be produced, having outlived its value.

There are so many things I remember about the penny as I grew up…especially the penny postcard. I used to write to athletes, primarily MLB players for their autographs and include a penny postcard for their signature for an easy return — many of which I still have like Ty Cobb, Cy Young, and Honus Wagner.

Just as the Five and Dime stores disappeared, so goes the one-cent copper penny.

Thank you penny for all your uses, the penny arcade, jawbreakers, bubble gum, and gum balls.

I understand that it costs nearly 3 cents to make a penny, so it has become obsolete.

Like so much in life, eventually things outlive their usefulness and just disappear.
